Tinnermann et al. investigated whether value information such as the price of a medication can further modulate behavioral nocebo effects and the underlying neural network dynamics (see the Perspective by Colloca). They used brain imaging to characterize the circuits involved in nocebo hyperalgesia within the descending pain pathway from the prefrontal cortex to the spinal cord. Their findings revealed how value information increased the nocebo effect. —PRS

Residual Tumor Cells That Drive Disease Relapse after Chemotherapy Do Not Have Enhanced Tumor Initiating Capacity
Although chemotherapy is used to treat most advanced solid tumors, recurrent disease is still the major cause of cancer-related mortality. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been the focus of intense research in recent years because they provide a possible explanation for disease relapse. However, the precise role of CSCs in recurrent disease remains poorly understood and surprisingly little attenti...
متن کاملCombination Treatment with All-Trans Retinoic Acid Prevents Cisplatin-Induced Enrichment of CD133+ Tumor-Initiating Cells and Reveals Heterogeneity of Cancer Stem Cell Compartment in Lung Cancer
The existence of specific cellular subpopulations within primary tumors with increased tumorigenic potential and chemotherapy resistance (tumor-initiating cells, TICs) holds great therapeutic implications. Resistant cells can remain quiescent for long periods and be responsible for local relapses and metastasis. We and others have previously described in non-small-cell lung cancer the presence ...
متن کاملMatrix Metalloproteinase-10 Promotes Kras-Mediated Bronchio-Alveolar Stem Cell Expansion and Lung Cancer Formation
Matrix metalloproteinase 10 (MMP-10; stromelysin 2) is a member of a large family of structurally related matrix metalloproteinases, many of which have been implicated in tumor progression, invasion and metastasis. We recently identified Mmp10 as a gene that is highly induced in tumor-initiating lung bronchioalveolar stem cells (BASCs) upon activation of oncogenic Kras in a mouse model of lung ...
متن کاملSmall-sized colorectal cancer cells harbor metastatic tumor-initiating cells
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is heterogeneous and contains different-sized cells. Recent studies have shown that tumor-initiating cells (TICs) are involved in cancer initiation, recurrence and metastasis. However, connections between cancer cell size and stem-like properties are largely unknown. Here we purified large- and small-sized CRC cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) based on ...
متن کاملInterleukin-12 Implication in Tumor Initiating Capacity of Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common malignancy worldwide, with 1.23 million patients diagnosed each year and a huge proportion of them characteristic early metastasis [1]. Usually, colorectal cancer mortality occurs in patients whose cancer cells metastasize to distant sites, such as the liver, lungs, brain, and bones. In detail, individual cells must reach the sites of metastasis...
متن کاملCD133 is a temporary marker of cancer stem cells in small cell lung cancer, but not in non-small cell lung cancer.
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Current investigations in the field of cancer research have intensively focused on the 'cancer stem cell' or 'tumor-initiating cell'. While CD133 was initially considered as a stem cell marker only in the hematopoietic system and the nervous system, the membrane antigen also identifies tumorigenic cells in certain solid tum...
